This Carving appears to be a Wilson Tawaquaptewa Kachina doll, however, I was assured by a Tawaquaptewa expert it is not. The doll was part of a small collection of dolls that was acquired in the 1940's and 50's. It is 3 3/4" tall to the top of its head not counting the feather. They were stored away for years and eventually sold by a descendant of the original collectors. Wilson Tawaquaptewa intentionally carved dolls incorrectly or different from any exact depiction of any particular spirit. It is believed he did this to relieve himself of guilt for selling kachina dolls of an exact deity which many considered to be religious figures and not something to sell. This particular doll has the features of his dolls and was purchased in the era his dolls were being sold. Since the only evidence I have is an opinion I am listing the doll with a question mark. Even so a 1940’s Kachina is rare and very collectible.
